Mountain Karisimbi is located in Volcanoes national park and it is part of the eight mountains within the Virunga massif. Karisimbi is at the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, towering at 4,507m above sea level.
A hike to the summit takes about 6 to 7 hours and a night is spent on the camp and after proceed with a hike to the summit the next morning. The hike exposes you to different attractions like lush montane forests, primates and bird species.
Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park and start the hike
Depending on your location in Kigali, the driver guide will pick you and start the safari to Volcanoes National Park. The park is home to different wildlife, among others including mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and mammals like Forest elephants, buffaloes, bush pigs, giant forest hogs, duikers, spotted hyenas, bush-bucks among others.
The drive will start at around 05:00hours and this enables you to reach in time. On arrival at the park offices, you will head for briefing, hire some potters and then start the hike that will take about 5 hours to reach the camp where you will spend a night. This means that you require to be physically fit since you are to hike for long distances and also have your packed lunch with you to eat while taking a hike. While on the hike spot birds like Rwenzori batis, Rwenzori turacos among others and primates like black and white colobus monkeys and red-tailed monkeys.
In case you are lucky, you can spot some gorillas and golden monkeys. On arrival at the camp that stands at 3700m, you will rest for a night.
Day 2: Reach the summit, descend and transfer back to Kigali city
Wake up and proceed with a hike, reach the summit and enjoy the amazing views, take photos of memories and then find the trail that will make you slope to the starting point. Arrive at the base and clear with the park and your driver guide will be ready to take you back to Kigali. He will drop you at the point of your interest and this will mark the end of the safari.
