This 5 Days Rwanda Primates Safari takes you to Nyungwe Forest National Park for Rwanda chimpanzee trekking and Volcanoes National Park for Rwanda gorilla trekking.
Day One: Kigali to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Pick up from Kigali and transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park southwest of Rwanda. Nyungwe is one of nature’s best gifts to Africa. It is an astonishingly green ancient park that is ranked as among the largest tropical forests in Central and East Africa.
Its abundance of 250 tree species and 140 species of radiant Orchids makes it the most ecologically diverse setting in Rwanda. The natural forest is also renowned for its large troops of colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, butterflies, and over 300 bird species recorded.
As common with most forested areas, expect rain anytime whilst in Nyungwe so packing appropriate clothing would come in handy. Overnight in Nyungwe.
Day Two: In Nyungwe Forest Chimpanzee Trekking
After morning breakfast, drive to Uwinka information center where you will be briefed about the chimpanzee trek. Thereafter, enter the forest in search of the chimpanzees – man’s closest cousins.
In the afternoon, partake any of the optional activities available in Nyungwe if desired on payment of extra. You can choose from the various activities like canopy walk, primate walk, guided nature walk, birding, and hiking experience.
Retire at your lodging in time for dinner and overnight.
Day Three: Nyungwe to Volcanoes National Park
Morning breakfast, check out and transfer through the rolling hills for which Rwanda is well known to Musanze – The Home Base of the Mountain Gorillas. Arrival later in the afternoon and settle in at your lodging in preparation for the big day tomorrow. Overnight in Musanze.
Day Four: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
After an early morning breakfast at your lodging, transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi where you will be entertained by songs and folklore from the local cultural group prior to your briefing before the gorilla trek.
You are also welcome to have a hot cup of tea or coffee with a bite if you so wish. After briefing by the representatives from the park, you will be allocated into groups of 8 tourists for the gorilla trek.
Enjoy a one hour photo moment and experience of the mountain gorillas. Return to your lodge and stay at leisure the rest of the day with memories of the moments spent with the gentle giants.
Day Five: Musanze to Kigali / Departure
Enjoy sunrise in Musanze. After breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for briefing prior to your Golden monkey trek. The Golden Monkey has a golden-orange patch on the upper flanks and back.
These monkeys produce a wide range of vocalizations often, remarkably, without making any facial movements, in the manner of a ventriloquist. These monkeys will easily be found as they mostly live at the bottom of the Volcano Mountains with in the bamboo forest.
By just following the traces of fresh leftovers from the bamboo shoots eaten, you will be able to locate them in a little while. You will spend one hour watching these beautiful creatures as they try picking the bamboo shoots and also make vast leaps from tree to tree and this is possible with their long tails that provide balance.
Their long tails sometimes get stuck by the bamboo and they get cut off so you will also encounter some monkeys with short tails. They are also very delightful for photography!
After your golden monkey trek, transfer to Kigali with drop off at your residence / airport for your onward journey. For those having onward departure flights on this day, the check-in time for the flight must be from 18.00hrs onwards otherwise an additional night in Kigali will be needed!
