This 6 Days Rwanda Chimpanzees & Wildlife Safari takes you to Nyungwe Forest National Park for Rwanda chimpanzee trekking and Akagera National Park for a Rwanda wildlife safari.
Day One: Arrival in Kigali
Welcome to Kigali. You will be met by our representative who will then transfer you to your hotel in Kigali for overnight. After check in at the hotel, you will be briefed about your safari.
Day Two: Kigali to Nyungwe Forest National Park via Huye (formerly Butare)
After early morning breakfast, depart Kigali for Nyungwe Forest national Park. En route, you will have three stopovers in Nyabisindu (formerly known as Nyanza) and in Butare (known to be the second largest and intellectual city of Rwanda), and at Uwinka Information Centre.
In Nyanza, you will visit the King’s palace and the seat of the outdated monarchy. In Butare, you will visit the National Museum that is regarded as the best Ethnographic museum in East Africa with rich information about the cultural history of Rwanda. After the museum visit, you will be entertained by amazing folklore performances from the Intore dancers before your lunch break in Butare.
After lunch, continue to Nyungwe with your last stop at the park offices at Uwinka for any important updates in preparation for your next day’s activities. Dinner and overnight at your chosen hotel.
Day Three: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park
Early morning breakfast followed by a transfer to Uwinka tourist information center for briefing prior to your chimpanzee trekking experience! Besides the chimpanzees, you will also encounter 13 other species of primates, various species of birds, butterflies, vegetation among others. Nyungwe Forest is the only place in Africa where troops of 300 black-and-white colobus monkeys can be seen jumping in the trees! An amazing sight! Return to your accommodation in time for dinner and overnight.
Day Four: Nyungwe to Akagera National Park
Morning breakfast, check out, and depart for Akagera National Park via Kigali and Kayonza. It will be a relatively long ride so you will have stopovers on the way for lunch and to stretch your legs a bit. Arrive in Akagera before dark in time for dinner and overnight at your preferred lodging.
Akagera NP is named for the Kagera River which flows along with its eastern boundary feeding into several lakes the largest of which is Lake Ihema. The complex system of lakes and linking papyrus swamps makes up over 1/3 of the park and is the largest protected wetland in Central Africa.
Day Five: Whole Day Safari Adventure in Akagera NP
After morning breakfast and together with your packed lunch boxes, embark on your exploration of Akagera NP. Enjoy a morning boat trip on Lake Ihema which is a very rewarding experience for seeing a large number of hippos, the huge Nile crocodiles, and plenty of birds!
The rest of the day will be spent on a game drive exploring the park with lots of animals to be encountered giraffes, buffaloes, large herds of zebras, elands, topis among others. Nyamwashama plains, also known as the giraffe valley are usually full of surprises!
Day Six: Akagera to Kigali
Enjoy morning sunrise in Akagera. After morning breakfast, check out and drive back to Kigali with drop off at your hotel or residence or at the airport if having an onward journey.
